Bisphenol-A is an industrial chemical that has been present in many canned goods since the 1960s to help protect the integrity of cans and prevent microbial contamination of food. It also has been used in hard plastic bottles and in household products such as food storage containers.

In addition to affecting reproductive systems [23]–[27], an increased risk of obesity has emerged as an additional potential adverse effect of BPA exposure in experimental animal studies [1], [7], [9], [11]–[13]. Exposure to BPA has been shown to suppress the release of adiponectin [28]–[30], an adipocyte-specific hormone that increases insulin sensitivity. Thus, there is a biological plausibility that BPA could lead to insulin resistance and increased susceptibility to obesity and metabolic syndromes.
